The Trestle....
The Tiburon Trestle was constructed as part of the San Francisco and San Rafael Railroad, which was initially announced in late 1882. It was later incorporated into the San Francisco & North Pacific Railroad and became operational on May 1, 1884. The trestle was a key feature of this railway line.
The primary purpose of the Tiburon Trestle was to connect the city of San Rafael, with the town of Tiburon on the eastern shore of the Tiburon Peninsula. The railway provided a direct transportation link between these two locations.
Tiburon served as a crucial transportation hub at the time because it offered ferry connections to San Francisco. Passengers and goods arriving at Tiburon by train could easily transfer to ferries that would take them across San Francisco Bay to the city itself. This made Tiburon an important gateway to San Francisco.
The completion of the Tiburon Trestle and the rail line contributed significantly to the development of Marin County and facilitated the movement of people and goods between Marin County and San Francisco. It played a pivotal role in Peter Donahue's vision of connecting northern Sonoma County to San Francisco via an extensive railway network.
For 28 years, you could not leave or return to Belvedere or Tiburon without passing a swaybacked horse named Blackie grazing in his pasture. Blackie was a former calvary horse who retired at the age of 12 on his private pasture at the corner of Tiburon Boulevard and Trestle Glen Road, aka ‘Blackie’s Pasture’
The History of Blackie's Pasture
Today, the Tiburon Trestle is a historical landmark and a reminder of the region's rich transportation history. While it no longer serves as a railway bridge, it stands as a symbol of the past and a testament to the development of transportation infrastructure in the San Francisco Bay Area
